Leaf sheaths papillose (30X), sometimes sparsely so. Perigynium beak ascending or loosely spreading, 2.8-4 mm, exceeding pistillate scales 0-0.8 mm. 2n = 52, 54, 56.
Fruiting late spring-early summer. Dry to moist, open forests and meadows; 0-1000 m; Alta., B.C., Man., N.B., N.S., Ont., Que., Sask.; Conn., D.C., Ill., Ind., Iowa, Kans., Ky., Maine, Md., Mass., Mich., Minn., Mo., Mont., Nebr., N.H., N.J., N.Y., N.C., N.Dak., Ohio, Oreg., Pa., R.I., S.Dak., Vt., Va., W.Va., Wis., Wyo.
The name Carex straminea has been incorrectly applied at times to C. tenera var. tenera.
